My Bichon Frise, Sam is terrified of thunder and firecrackers. With July 4th not so far away, can I give him Valarian Root to calm him down? Is it harmful?

It is not uncommon for dogs to be upset over loud noises such as thunder and fireworks. If the problem results in the dog being extremely frightened and unable to function, they may have a phobia. Phobias are fear reactions that are out of proportion to the stimulus and usually interfere with normal function. During storms and other loud noises, it can often help to isolate the pet in a room with no windows and provide some other noise such as a fan running or loud music. Owners should keep their responses neutral and positive, not coddling the pet. For some animals offering a tasty food treat or playing a fun game can also help ease their fears. When the problem is severe, a visit to your veterinarian can help determine which medications might be appropriate to calm your pet.
