Introducing Cats and Dogs

I have a 12 yr old Lhasa Apso and have just gotten a kitten. How do I make it easier on both of them (and me) to introduce the kitten into the household?

Kittens are very rambunctious and curious and may annoy an older dog. A dog that is not familiar with cats may find the kitten behavior problematic. To ease introductions the dog should be on a leash and the kitten supervised so that neither of them can startle the other. Food rewards for each one will help associate pleasant things with being together. Initially they should be separated when not supervised and gradually over time if they do not show anxiety or aggression they can be together for longer periods of time with people present.
