The beyOnd Report

beyOnd Report

At beyOnd, we believe in the power of making small steps toward a positive difference. That means being transparent about our actions and being accountable for the progress we've made. Below you'll find a report we issued in 2012 to document our efforts for pet welfare and sustainability, along with our big dreams for the future.

The report focuses on four areas:

Pet Welfare, Operations, Company Culture and Sustainability

Pet Welfare

We want to change the perceptions of shelter pets so we can help even more pets find homes. For us, this starts with forming relationships with shelters across the country. We feed the pets that pass through their doors and share the inspiration we gain from their many innovations.

Here are a few of our accomplishments from 2009–2011:

462

shelters have received a donation of Purina ONE® pet food
Six Hundred thirty-nine thousand pets served by these shelters

7,805,378 Bowls

of Purina ONE® cat food
have been donated

334,370

adoptions by the shelters in our program

3,347,270 Bowls

of Purina ONE® dog food

Bowl by Bowl

In 2011 we created Bowl by Bowl, a fun and easy Facebook game that helped to feed shelter pets while giving them the recognition they deserve. For every quiz or article players completed through December 2012, we donated one bowl of food to a shelter.

Kickers

Each time Bowl by Bowl fans reached a donation milestone, we unlocked a Kicker, a special activity designed to help shelter pets in even more ways. For example, we donated high-quality cameras to shelters and sent professional photographer Nanette Martin to photograph shelter pets at the Virginia Beach SPCA.

Team Goals

  • My goal is for more people to realize how wonderful shelter pets are and for more of them to be adopted.”
    — Pam
  • I enjoy the challenge of trying to build a brand while making a positive difference in the world. Never easy and always challenging, but very rewarding.”
    — Mark
  • My goal is to continuously take steps to try and make the world a better place, one pet at a time.”
    — Heather
  • I want to see all formulas of Purina ONE available wherever consumers shop.”
    — Megan
  • I love it when our fans share their success stories with us. They can say it best when they tell us how much their pets enjoy our food. It makes me feel like we really are making a difference.”
    — Jill
  • I want to create a wet pet food that people really feel good about feeding to their pets — one that not only tastes really great, is packed with super nutrition, but is also better for the world we share.”
    — Gina
  • I want people to know how much passion we have for pets and for making their world a better place. Working on beyOnd is more than a job — it allows me to do my part for dogs everywhere, and that feels great!”
    — Christina
  • Less is more. Simplifying our pet food recipes to use less resources in ingredients, packaging, and manufacturing would be a small step towards a better world for us and our pets.”
    — Peter

Sustainable Packaging and Other Small Steps

Our final package is made from at least 92% renewable materials.
A lining made with bio-plastic, which is made from corn, which can be planted year after year.
Solar energy used at one of our plants to contribute a small portion of the plant’s energy needs.
Soy-based ink made with vegetable oil instead of ink that is petroleum based.
Paper that comes from responsible sources, certified by the Sustainable Forestry Initiative.
Factory skylights at one plant to let the sun help light our warehouse.

Small Steps

We know large changes don’t happen overnight. That’s why we’re taking small steps every day at our St. Louis headquarters to help make a positive impact on the world we share with our pets.
Addition of rain-sensing technology to irrigation systems.
Installation of water-efficient toilets that reduce gallons per flush by 65%.
Campus-wide lighting project that has reduced energy consumption by 50%.
First business in St. Louis to require housekeeping contractors to use green cleaning products and techniques.
Introduction of single-stream recycling which resulted in 30% more recycling.
