Wet + Dry Cat Food

Nourish like nature intended.

  1. Serving a variety of tastes and textures – while helping promote healthy hydration - helps to feed your cat’s instincts.

It’s wonderful if you’re already feeding wet food and dry kibble as part of your feeding routine. If not, here’s why you should consider it.

In nature, cats get to experience a variety of tastes and textures and derive much of their hydration from their prey.

That’s why we believe wet and dry foods are better together. Dry kibble mimics the crunch of prey and helps keep teeth clean. Wet food has a protein and moisture content that’s close to a cat’s natural diet.

All wet and dry cat food from Purina ONE is 100% nutritionally complete. So if you’re already feeding wet food exclusively, like for dental or medical reasons, stay the course.

But if you’re feeding primarily dry kibble, this activity shows you how to introduce wet food to your cat’s diet and considerations for the reactions you’ll experience along the way.

  2. Make the Introduction

Normally, we’d recommend allowing 7 - 10 days for introducing a new food into your cat's diet. But here, patience is extra key. So start small and give it a little more time.

Try feeding a small amount of wet food as a treat after play. This will help create a positive association with the new food and allow your cat to get accustomed to the taste, texture and smell on his or her own terms while keeping an eye on food waste.

    To Complete This Step

When you first introduced new flavors and textures of wet food, which sources of protein appealed most to your cat? Were any rejected? Was there any correlation with the recipe of dry kibble your cat is used to? How long did the process take? Record these observations in your Journal, and upload a shot of your cat trying the wet food.

  3. Build Up Slowly

Once your cat has shown an appetite for more, gradually increase the amount of wet food as you build to a normal daily serving. Just be sure to decrease the amount of dry kibble you’re serving accordingly as to avoid over feeding.

Taking a methodical approach with this will help your cat avoid dietary upsets that may discourage your cat from enjoying and benefiting from this beneficial form of nourishment.

    To Complete This Step

Gradually build up to the desired amount of wet food by following our recommended daily feeding amounts for serving wet and dry food together. How long did it take? Take note of your cat’s behavior before, during and after feeding.

  4. Switch it Up

Since all of our wet foods have the high levels of protein cats crave, you can feel good about feeding it every day. They also provide a great opportunity to add flavor variety to your cat’s diet.

Some ideas: Our traditional SMARTBlend® wet food recipes feature real tuna, beef, chicken or turkey as a pate or chunks in a savory sauce or gravy.

SMARTBlend® Healthy Metabolism wet food contains L-Carnitine to help your spayed or neutered cat maintain a healthy weight. These high-protein formulas have plenty of options like salmon, ocean whitefish, sole, chicken recipes.

And Purina ONE® SMARTBlend® Pairings are exciting new combinations with real poultry or fish like turkey, chicken, chicken hearts, trout or salmon in every meal.

    To Complete This Step

Let your cat try four different flavors. Note which ones you tried, and the reaction to them. Which flavor or protein source does your cat like best? Was it the food you thought they would like? Have you seen your cat eat differently depending on the type of food, like a preference for the size of kibble? Share your experience.

  5. Dawn & Dusk

Cats are crepuscular, meaning they are naturally most active just before sunrise and just after dark. If you work during the day, try feeding wet food early in the morning and after sunset to stay in tune with your cat's natural inclinations. Then, let your cat forage kibble throughout the day when you're away at work.

    To Complete This Activity

Try feeding wet food early in the morning and after sunset for a few days straight. Have you noticed a shift in your cat’s overnight behavior? Is your cat less active or waking you less frequently when it’s dark? Make note of any changes you’ve noticed.
