Featured Dog Q&A

What is the recommended feeding schedule and amount for 5 month old German Shepherd puppies?

Dr. Horwitz, a Veterinarian says:
A German Shepherd puppy will be a large dog and should be on a diet such as Purina ONE Large Breed Puppy formula. This diet is specifically formulated to promote a lean body condition and to help large breed puppies grow at a normal rate. Five month old German Shepherd puppies should be fed at least twice daily. They can be provided between 3.5 and 5 cups of food a day depending on their activity level and being careful not to overfeed.

Featured Cat Q&A

I have 3 cats. I've been feeding them Purina ONE Advanced Nutrition Hairball Formula since my youngest cat turned 1. The eldest cats have been inactive mostly since they turned 1, and now the youngest seems to be gaining weight, though she is more active. I haven't noticed the cats eating more though, I usually put about 3 cups of food at a time, and usually I need to add food every 2 days or so, so I know they aren’t eating more than a cup each every couple of days, and the label states that each day they should be fed about 3/4 to 1 cup per day. I'm thinking about changing their food to the Healthy Weight Formula. Will that maybe make the cats more active? I mean in addition to more exercise. Any advice would help.

Dr. Horwitz, a Veterinarian says:
While feeding all the cats out of one common bowl is often easier, there are drawbacks. First, one cat can over eat and become over weight. Second, it is very difficult to know how much each cat is consuming and food consumption is a good marker of health. It would be a good idea to put out three separate bowls and fill each with 3/4 to one cup a day. This will help you observe the cats eating and know how much food is consumed daily. Next, if the cats are over weight then a change to Purina ONE Healthy Weight formula might be a good idea.
