"To improve the environmental performance of
our products we use what's called a life cycle analysis to
understand where the biggest impact exists, so we know where to
focus our innovation and organizational efforts," explains Purina's
Global Sustainability Director Mark Brodeur.
"Our commitment to improved environmental
impact extends right across our value chain from the sourcing of
raw materials through our own production and distribution to
consumer use and eventual disposal of packaging. What we have
learned through this process is that the majority of our products'
impact comes from the resources that go into growing, harvesting,
and transporting our ingredients.
Read below to understand the life cycle of a product, and
the areas where sustainability comes into play.
Our Life Cycle Approach
How the raw materials that go into the products are grown,
harvested and converted into high-quality ingredients.
How ingredients and other raw materials get to our factories,
and are transported from the factory to the store.
How Purina's manufacturing facilities use resources to efficiently
convert ingredients into high quality products.
How we protect our products through use of advanced materials,
water and energy to make a strong package with the least
- End of Life
How consumers ultimately dispose of a product's
packaging. For example, can a package be recycled?
While there's no easy answer, Purina ONE is motivated every day
to take small steps forward. "I often say that I have one of the
best jobs in the company. Not only do I have the opportunity
to work on important issues that can really make a difference, but
I also have the privilege to work with such a passionate and
committed group of experts across Purina everyday," explains
Brodeur. "It's something that gives me pride."
